The 5 Best Areas to Install XPEL Marine PPF on Your Boat

Not every boat owner is ready for a full hull installation. Some want to start with the most vulnerable areas — the places that get hit first, scratched most often, and cost the most to repair. That is a smart approach.

At Seaboard Surface Solutions, here are the five areas we most commonly install XPEL Marine PPF on, and why each one matters.

1. Hull Sides (Bow to Stern)

The hull sides take the most abuse of any part of your boat. Every time you dock, pull alongside another vessel, or load and unload from a trailer, the sides of your hull are at risk. Fender rubs, dock edge contact, trailer guide scratches — over time these add up to a hull that looks beat up even if the boat is mechanically sound.

Full hull coverage with XPEL Marine PPF eliminates all of this. Once the film is installed, dock rash does not reach the gelcoat. Fender marks rub the film, not the surface. Trailer guides slide across the film without scratching. This is the most popular installation we do and the one with the highest return on investment.

2. Outboard Motor Cowlings

Outboard motors are expensive to replace and constantly exposed. UV rays fade the paint on cowlings quickly in South Florida. Saltwater spray and condensation cause surface oxidation. Passengers and equipment brushing against them cause scuffs and scratches.

XPEL Marine PPF on outboard cowlings is one of our cleanest, fastest installs — and the result is a cowling that stays looking factory-new for years with nothing more than a basic wash.

3. Transom

The transom is the stern face of your boat — one of the most visible areas and one of the most frequently damaged. It gets hit by dock bumpers, brushed by lines, and scuffed during boarding and deboarding. On sportfishers and larger vessels, the transom often has lettering, graphics, or expensive finishes that are difficult to restore once damaged.

PPF on the transom protects all of that — the finish, the graphics, and the gelcoat underneath — with a nearly invisible film that requires no special care.

4. Swim Platform and Leading Edges

The swim platform is the most trafficked area on most recreational boats. Wet feet, dive fins, fishing gear, anchor chains — everything goes across the swim platform. The leading edge where the platform meets the hull is especially vulnerable to chips and dings.

Installing XPEL Marine PPF on the swim platform and its leading edges dramatically extends the life of these surfaces and prevents the kind of damage that is expensive to repair cleanly.

5. Gunnel Tops

The gunnel tops — the flat surfaces running along the sides of the cockpit — are where hands go, rods rest, gear sits, and people lean. They get scratched constantly during normal use. On boats with teak or painted gunnels, this wear is especially visible and costly to refinish.

PPF on gunnel tops stops this wear completely. The film is nearly invisible and does not change the look or feel of the surface.

Combining Areas for Maximum Protection

Many of our clients start with one or two areas and expand over time. Others go straight to full hull coverage combined with cowlings, transom, and gunnel tops in a single installation. Either approach works — the important thing is that every area covered by XPEL Marine PPF is an area that will never need to be corrected or repainted due to surface damage.
