Protecting Your Brand New Valhalla Center Console

Buying a new Valhalla center console is a good time to plan how you will perfect it and protect it from oxidizing. Before the first fishing trip, sandbar day, or weekend in the Keys, you can choose protection that fits the way you will use and store your boat.

For owners who want protection from everyday rubbing and scuffs, we recommend considering XPEL Marine paint protection film on suitable areas. Most popular areas for our clients are hullsides, motor cowlings, and select topside areas depending on use.

Marine ceramic coatings are a good choice for easier cleaning and finish care. Combining Marine PPF in areas that take the most wear with ceramic coating everywhere else gives you a practical way to address both needs.

Wax remains an option, but it is our least favorable choice as the main long-term protection plan for a new boat of this class. Its lower starting cost comes with repeated applications, and it does not provide the physical barrier of protection film, or the added durability and lifespan a ceramic coating can provide.

At Seaboard Surface Solutions, we help South Florida boat owners compare these options and build a plan around their boat, storage arrangements, and maintenance expectations.

This guide explains what each option does, where it makes sense, and what to ask before booking the work, whether that be with us or a competitor.

Why protection should start when your Valhalla is new:

A new boat gives you the opportunity to perfect and preserve a finish before it develops visible wear. That matters whether you own a Valhalla V33, V37, V41, V46, or V55.

Think about a normal day on the water. Salt spray dries on the hull. Your boat rubs against the dock at lunch. Someone drags a bag against the console. Fishing equipment gets moved through the cockpit. At the end of the day, the boat needs to be washed, and every brush or towel touches the finish again.

Protection should match those actual contact points. A boat kept on a lift under cover has different needs from one that sits in an open slip. A family boat that visits the sandbar has different wear patterns from a center console used for frequent offshore fishing.

Starting early also gives you time to plan the work around delivery. We can inspect the finish, address anything that needs attention like swirls, holograms, and any other marring from delivery. Even brand new boats need to be polished to perfect them! They don't come perfect from the factory!

New does not automatically mean ready for Marine PPF or coating. The surface still needs to be polished and prepped!

Comparing Marine PPF, ceramic coatings, and wax

Protection method

Main purpose

Best fit

Main limitation

XPEL Marine PPF

A physical film between the finish and everyday contact

Hullsides, Cowlings, and high wear areas depending on use

Higher initial cost

Marine ceramic coating

Easier cleaning and longevity compared to waxing

Owners focused on gloss and routine maintenance

Does not provide the physical barrier of film

PPF and ceramic together

Film where contact occurs and coating everywhere else

Owners who want coverage tailored to the whole boat

Higher inital cost

Marine wax

Temporary finish protection and shine

Short-term protection or a limited initial budget

Repeated applications and no meaningful barrier against scuffs, easy to strip

The right question is what you want protection to accomplish. If your biggest concern is dock rash, start by discussing Marine PPF. If your biggest concern is cleaning and maintaining the finish, discuss ceramic. If both matter, compare a combined package.

XPEL Marine PPF for a new Valhalla center console

PPF stands for paint protection film. XPEL Marine PPF is a protective polyurethane film made for marine use. It sits on top of a suitable finished surface and provides a sacrificial layer that can take some everyday wear, scuffs and scratching while protecting the paint or gelcoat underneath. Harsher scuffs and scratches will tear through the film but help prevent a gelcoat or paint repair. Marine PPF can be patched if this occurs.

Here at Seaboard, our most common Marine PPF applications are hullsides and moto cowlings. The product also has self-healing properties for light swirls that will occur over time with washing and use. Deeper cuts and damage that penetrate the film can be patched.

PPF adds a physical layer, but it still does not make your boat immune to damage from a hard dock edge, collision, sharp object, or any major accidents.

Where we would begin planning film coverage

For a new Valhalla, begin with the hullsides above the waterline, this part of the boat will take the most abuse and usually gets the least maintenance. A darker color hull will make even small defects easier to notice, so owners often give these areas a high priority.

Outboard cowlings are another area to discuss. Most Valhalla's are powered by Mercury outboards, and Mercury paint is notoriously soft and easy to scratch.

Other surface areas depending on how the boat is used would make sense to protect with Marine PPF as well. We would look at all high impact areas depending on use. Coverage should follow the actual wear pattern instead of assuming every surface needs film.

Full hullside coverage or selected areas

Before choosing, ask where seams and edges will sit, for complicated topside areas having to many edges or seams, wouldn't look great aesthetically. In some cases visual appeal will be more important than protecting it with PPF

See our XPEL Marine PPF service page for more info on Marine PPF

Marine PPF FAQ:

1. Will clear PPF change the appearance of my new Valhalla?

Clear film is intended to preserve the appearance of the finish. Edges and seams can still be visible at close range, and the final result depends on preparation, the surface shape, and installation. Discuss the layout before work begins so you know what to expect. Perfecting the surface prior to applying XPEL Marine PPF will make the end result much better. Clear PPF will enhance depth of gloss and color on your boat!

2. How long does XPEL Marine protection film last?

XPEL Marine PPF will realistically last 5-7 years before needing to be replaced. It comes with a 3 year manufacturer warranty.

3. Does PPF prevent dock rash and scratches?

Film can help protect against minor rubbing, scratching, and scuffs, but the amount of force and the object involved matter is the ultimate decider. A hard impact or sharp edge can damage the film and the paint or gelcoat underneath if strong enough. Marine PPF is there for protection but its not indestructible.

4. Can XPEL Marine PPF be installed on the engines?

Of course! XPEL Marine PPF is great for motor cowlings to keep the protected against scratching and oxidation.

5. Can damaged film be replaced without redoing the whole boat?

Yes. If you damage your film from a hard impact or gouge the film can be seemed in, although slightly noticeable up close depending on color of the boat. If it was a really hard impact, a paint or gelcoat may be needed.

6. Does XPEL Marine PPF protect against oxidation?

Yes! Surfaces where XPEL Marine PPF are applied will not oxidize underneath as the film has excellent UV rejection ratings.

Ceramic coatings for a new Valhalla boat

A marine ceramic coating is a liquid-applied treatment that cures on a properly prepared surface. Its water-repelling behavior helps with routine cleaning, and it can enhance the appearance of your boat by increasing gloss. Ceramic Coatings will last much longer than wax, and has a lifespan of 18-24 months with annual maintenance reccomended!

The first installation is always more expensive than annual maintenance.

For an owner, the main attraction is maintenance. A boat with a well-maintained coating can be easier to keep looking clean. It still needs rinsing, and regular washing. If you don't want to do this yourself we have maintenance plans available, which you can learn more about HERE. Water beading is useful, but it does not mean salt or minerals disappear on their own.

Ceramic should be chosen with the correct expectations. It does not add the cushioning or sacrificial physical layer that Marine PPF offers. If a bag buckle scratches the console or a fender grinds grit against the hull, a coating cannot be relied on to stop that damage.

Where ceramic can make sense

Ceramic makes sense if you're a causal boater that just wants their boat easier to clean up, and more protection from oxidation than what wax can offer. A perfectly polished boat and a proper ceramic application, enhance the appearance of the boat, and make it look better for longer.

Preparation matters even on a brand new boat

Even brand new boats aren't perfect, they all have swirl marks and holograms in the paint and gelcoat. Swirls and holograms are circular micro scratches that you can see in direct sunlight. They effect how glossy a boat looks. Swirls and holograms = less gloss, having them polished out = more gloss, putting ceramic coating on top = even more gloss, and that "deep wet look"

One benefit of marine ceramic coatings is they can go on almost any surface. Our premium ceramic coating package includes full prep work and coating applied to all smooth gelcoat or paint, nonskid surfaces, glass, plastics, metals, inside hatches and compartments, etc. We can literally protect every single surface on your boat with a marine ceramic coating.

Five FAQs about marine ceramic coatings

1. Is ceramic coating worth it on a brand new Valhalla?

It can be a good choice if easier cleaning and finish care are your main priorities. Starting with a new boat allows you to establish a maintenance plan early. If physical scuff protection is the main goal, discuss PPF as well.

2. Can ceramic coating be applied to gelcoat?

Yes, compatible marine coatings can be used on gelcoat, paint, glass, and metals. The product, condition, preparation, and application process matter. Any freshly repaired area must meet the relevant cure requirements before protection is applied.

3. Will ceramic coating stop water spots?

Do not expect a spot-free boat. Water can bead and still leave minerals behind when it dries, but it definitely makes combatting waterspots much easier.

4. How long will a marine ceramic coating last?

Marine ceramic coatings can last 18-24 months, with annual maintenance recommended. Annual maintenance consists of a light polish and another layer of ceramic applied to continue the protection.

5. Do I still need to wash a ceramic-coated boat?

Yes. Ceramic is part of the maintenance plan. It does not replace washing. Use a soap designed for ceramic coatings is a must as well.

Combining PPF and ceramic for your new Valhalla

For many new Valhalla owners, our preferred starting point is a combined plan. Place PPF on high impact areas, then use ceramic coating everywhere else. This is our strongest protection package and a huge favorite amongst our higher end boat clientele.

An example of a combined protection plan

Our most popular combined protection offering is XPEL Marine PPF on hullsides and motor cowlings. Everything else (nonskid, topsides, metals, glass, plastics, cushions, etc. protected with a ceramic coating.

This is a planning example, rather than a fixed package for every model. A V37 and a V55 might have two different uses and one might require more protection than the other. In our first phone call or meeting we can go over all of this and come up with the best plan to keep your brand new Valhalla looking brand new for a long period of time!

Five FAQs about combining PPF and ceramic

1. Can ceramic coating go on top of XPEL Marine PPF?

Yes, XPEL Marine Ceramic Coating is designed to go on-top of marine PPF for added hydrophobicity and ease of maintenance. It also makes it look so much glossier.

2. Is a combined package always better than ceramic alone?

It provides a broader approach when you need both contact protection and easier cleaning. Ceramic alone can still be appropriate for an owner whose priorities and budget do not justify marine PPF. We will be able to assess and recommend options based on our professional opinions and what we've seen across different projects and boats.

3. Which surfaces should receive PPF first?

Start by identifying where the boat has the highest impact areas. Hullsides and Motor cowlings are out top choices for center consoles. The faux teak cap rails are also a big priority amongst other Valhalla owners.

4. Can I install film now and add ceramic later?

Certainly! While we recommend doing it all at once, you can certainly wait in between. Maybe you only want to do film on the hullsides and ceramic coating on the rest of the boat before taking delivery, when it comes down to annual maintenance we can apply ceramic coating on the hullsides then.

5. Does combining them mean I can stop worrying about maintenance?

No. You still need washing, clean fenders, suitable cleaning products, etc. Again if you don't want to worry about maintenance, we can design a custom maintenace plan that fits your needs, and take care of it for you!

Why wax is our least favorable long-term option

Marine wax can add shine and temporary protection to your boat, but in the South Florida elements, its only goin to last 3 months. It has a place when the initial budget is limited or you need an interim treatment before choosing a more expensive protection plan.

For a brand new Valhalla, however, we would usually put it behind film, ceramic, or a combined package. Wax does not provide the physical barrier that makes film useful in contact areas. It also needs repeated applications every 3 months, and one wrong choice of chemical to clean your boat and the wax is gone!

If your goal is to preserve a new boat while reducing dependence on repeated waxing, ask about ceramic. If your goal includes protection from light rubbing and scuffs, ask about film, if you plan on selling your boat a simple wax detail to get her looking good for showings will suffice.

Five FAQs about marine wax

1. Is waxing a new Valhalla better than leaving the finish untreated?

An appropriate wax can provide temporary protection and shine. We still recommend comparing it with longer-term options before choosing it as the main protection plan for a new premium center console.

2. How often will my boat need to be waxed?

Every 3 months, and polishing at least twice a year, as well. The short term savings, end up being more expensive throughout the year!

3. Does wax protect against fender marks or scratches?

No. Wax is not a physical barrier against scratches.

4. Can I wax over ceramic coating or PPF?

No. Waxing over ceramic coating defeats the purpose of ceramic, and will void XPEL marine PPF warranty.

5. Can I upgrade from wax to ceramic or PPF later?

Yes. Absolutely, we will strip the existing wax as part of our prep for an upgraded protective service.

How to plan protection before taking delivery

Contact us with your Valhalla model, delivery date, color, and where you well keep the boat. Photos are nice, but not needed, we know all the Valhalla models very well.

Then decide what matters most to you, easy maintenance, scratch protection, etc. and we will go over all the best options, weather it be ceramic coating, marine PPF, or a combination. Be forewarned we will try our best to steer you away from waxing haha!

We have a facility, trucks and trailers to pick up your boat if she's under 45 feet, or can help coordinate a haul out if needed.

Looking after your protected Valhalla

Once the installed products have cured, follow the care instructions provided with your package. Use suitable washing tools and compatible cleaners. Or simply have us take full care of the vessel for only a few hundred bucks a visit!

Keep fenders and covers clean. Trapped grit can create wear even on a protected surface. Check film edges and contact areas, and report lifting or damage before it becomes a larger problem.

A scheduled service can help owners who do not want to handle every wash themselves. See our boat washes and maintenance plans to discuss ongoing care.

Ten final FAQs for new Valhalla owners

1. What is the best protection for a brand new Valhalla center console?

Our preferred starting point for owners concerned about both contact wear and cleaning is a tailored PPF and ceramic package. At the very least ceramic coating the entire boat is practically a must!

2. Should I protect my boat before its first trip?

If the schedule allows, doing all prep and protective work before delivery usually makes the most sense.

3. Does a white Valhalla need protection as much as a dark one?

Yes and no. Darker colors show defects more than white, darker colors can also show oxidation much much quicker than white.

4. How much does Valhalla PPF or ceramic coating cost?

For XPEL Marine PPF on hullsides expect somewhere between $30-$45+ a square foot depending on coverage area and model of Valhalla. Ceramic coating can range from $200-$300 a foot depending on surfaces protected.

5. Can protection be installed at my marina, or dock behind my house?

Yes. If the boat needs to be hauled out we may need to choose a different marina, or haul it out on a trailer.

6. Will ceramic or PPF replace bottom paint?

No. If your boat stays in the water for extended periods of time bottom paint is a must. We can ceramic coat running surfaces if your boat is trailer or lift kept.

7. Will a protection package increase resale value?

Not necessarily, a well maintained and protected boat will protect its resale value rather than increasing it.

8. Will protection affect my boat or engine warranty?

Sometimes it will void paint warranty if your boat is painted, but any damage that can occur in the warranty window, will be more extensive to fix than the warranty period is worth in our opinion.

9. Can you protect my Valhalla if it is already a few months old?

Yes, prep may be a bit more extensive depending on wear.

10. What should I send Seaboard to get started?

Year, Model, and photos are a plus. We need 50% deposits on larger protection packages.
