How to Estimate the Cost of XPEL Marine PPF for Your Boat
One of the first questions boat owners ask when they hear about XPEL Marine Paint Protection Film is: "How much is this going to cost me?"
The answer depends on your boat's size, hull shape, and how much surface area you want covered. But there is a simple formula you can use right now to get a realistic ballpark.
The Quick Estimation Formula
At Seaboard Surface Solutions, XPEL Marine PPF starts at $30 per square foot up to $50 per square foot. To estimate full hull side coverage, use this formula:
Boat length (ft) × 5 × 2 × $30
The "× 5" accounts for the average hull height on boats with sides under 5 feet. The "× 2" covers both sides of the hull.
Examples:
- 25-foot boat: 25 × 5 × 2 × $30 = $7,500
- 35-foot boat: 35 × 5 × 2 × $30 = $10,500
- 40-foot boat: 40 × 5 × 2 × $30 = $12,000
- 50-foot boat: 50 × 5 × 2 × $30 = $15,000
If your boat's hull is taller than 5 feet — common on larger sportfishers, express cruisers, and yachts — the square footage increases accordingly and pricing will be higher. We always do an in-person assessment for larger vessels.
What Affects the Final Price
Several factors can bring the price up from the base estimate:
Hull complexity. Boats with lots of curves, bodylines, cutouts, or compound curves require more time and material to install correctly. A flat-sided center console is faster to film than a highly sculpted sportfisher.
Surface condition. If your hull has heavy oxidation, scratches, or gelcoat damage, those need to be corrected before PPF installation. Seaboard includes a full polishing process before every PPF job — this is not optional. Installing film over damaged gelcoat defeats the purpose.
Coverage area. Full hull sides are the most common installation, but many clients also add outboard cowlings, transoms, swim platforms, gunnel tops, and nav screens. Each additional area adds to the total.
Boat out of water. For most hull installations, the boat needs to be hauled out. Yachts over 100 feet can sometimes remain in the water. Haul-out costs vary by location and are not included in the PPF price.
Is XPEL Marine PPF Worth the Cost?
Compare the cost of PPF to the alternative. A full gelcoat restoration on a 40-foot boat in South Florida can run $8,000 to $15,000 or more — and that is just getting back to where you started, not protecting against future damage. With XPEL Marine PPF, you pay once and the hull is protected for 5 to 7 years with minimal ongoing maintenance.
For boats that spend a lot of time in the marina, on trailers, or getting heavy use, the math works strongly in favor of PPF.
