Does My Boat Need to Come Out of the Water for XPEL Marine PPF Installation?

It is one of the most practical questions we hear from boat owners considering XPEL Marine Paint Protection Film: "Do I need to haul my boat for this?"

The short answer is: for most vessels, yes — and here is why.

Why the Hull Needs to Be Out of Water

XPEL Marine PPF is applied to the hull sides above the waterline. The installation process requires the surface to be completely dry, clean, and accessible from all angles. A wet or partially submerged hull makes it impossible to properly prep the surface, apply the film flat without bubbles, and trim edges cleanly around waterline seams and bodylines.

For center consoles, sportfishers, express cruisers, and most powerboats, the boat needs to be out of the water — either on a trailer, in a boatyard lift, or on jack stands at a marina.

What About Large Yachts?

Larger yachts — generally 100 feet and above — can sometimes remain in the water during installation, depending on the boat's freeboard height and the areas being covered. On mega yachts and superyachts we can set up floats and scaffolding around the entire boat.

If you own a vessel in this size range, contact us directly and we will assess your specific situation.

Outboard Motors and Upper Surfaces

For outboard motor cowlings, gunnel tops, nav screens, swim platforms, and upper deck surfaces, the boat does not need to come out of the water at all. These areas are fully accessible with the boat in its slip. Many clients start with these areas before committing to a full hull installation.

What Happens During a Haul-Out Installation

Once your boat is out of the water and properly positioned, here is what the Seaboard installation process looks like:

  1. Full surface inspection — we identify any existing scratches, chips, or gelcoat damage that need to be addressed before film installation
  2. Paint correction — we polish and correct the hull surface so the film goes over a perfect finish
  3. Surface decontamination — the hull is cleaned with a solvent to ensure proper adhesion
  4. Film application — the film is applied wet using a slip solution, then squeegeed flat and trimmed around waterlines, windows, through-hulls, and bodylines
  5. Final inspection — we review every panel before signing off

The process takes 1 to 3 days depending on the vessel size and coverage area.

Do I Need to Do Anything Before the Haul-Out?

Ideally, your boat should be clean before we arrive. If the hull has heavy barnacles, growth, or bottom paint buildup, that should be cleaned before the haul-out — not because it affects the PPF directly, but because it makes working around the waterline much cleaner.

Any significant gelcoat damage — chips, cracks, deep scratches — should also be discussed with us beforehand. Minor surface damage we can correct on-site. Structural or deep gelcoat repairs may need to be handled separately before we install film.
